Back to school means back to club and school sports! We love to see active kids and adults – but it’s important that everyone’s teeth are protected as well!
Playing a contact sport doesn’t mean a toothless mouth. Don’t make your teeth become some of the millions of teeth that are broken or knocked out every year from sports related injuries just because you were not using a mouthguard. The recommendation is to wear one every time you are playing sports, including training sessions; this way your chances of fracturing or loosing a tooth and injuries to your lip, tongue, face and jaw reduce in almost 50%. It can feel like an unnecessary expense, but they will help you keep a good oral health and most definitively will help your pocket when avoiding the costs of what it means replacing a tooth.
There are three kinds of mouthguards that you can get:
- Over the counter stock mouthguards, which are not custom fit and comes in a range of premade shapes and sizes. They are the cheapest option, but can be usually uncomfortable to wear and the level of protection is the lowest in between mouthguards
- Over the counter boil-and-bite. These mouthguards are in the middle-ground when it comes to cost and function. They will feel more comfortable than the premade ones but won’t protect as good a custom fit.
- Custom-fitted mouthguards are made by your dentist, taking an impression of your teeth and gums and offers the highest protection when it comes to mouthguards as they are personalised for your bite.
A good mouthguard will usually cover your upper teeth and gum (with the exception of people with an underbite-people who have the lower teeth sitting in front of the upper teeth), be more comfortable and provide sufficient thickness around all your teeth. And if you use braces, that’s all good, a mouthguard can be made with extra spacing around the braces so it’s comfortable and protective.
Looking after your teeth is not only a cosmetic matter, you will be having better quality of life and feel more confident when you have a healthy mouth and a healthy smile!
